To mark the start of the Paralympic season, the Promise Consulting Institute | Panel On The Web conducted an exclusive study in collaboration with Oocity, involving a large sample of the French population (1,306 respondents).
This study was initiated in response to a growing demand from French economic and institutional stakeholders for precise data on profiles and perceptions related to disability, broadly defined to include situations of discomfort likely to create accessibility and inclusion needs. It aims to understand the feelings of French people regarding their personal situation in terms of disability, health, or discomfort related to vision, hearing, motor skills, concentration, and memory.
The results highlight the diversity of individual challenges related to disabilities, whether physical, sensory, or cognitive.
Key findings of the study
1. These results are compelling and establish disability as a national priority.
A significant proportion of French people (25%) report regularly or occasionally experiencing difficulty walking or climbing stairs, a proportion that far exceeds the proportion of physical disabilities recorded.
These difficulties also appear at a very young age, with 29% of 18-24 year-olds experiencing difficulty moving around in certain situations. Cognitive difficulties are no less significant (...).
2. These results also cover sensory abilities, such as vision and hearing.
Vision and hearing are not immune to the perception of disability, health, or discomfort.
The results reveal significant disparities depending on the region of residence, social class, age, and even gender of the respondents. These disparities should be of concern to those who advocate for the inclusion of all citizens in the design of goods and services, regardless of gender, age, or place of residence in France. Once again, these results support a major national cause surrounding disability, which, in 2024, will still be one of the main factors of exclusion from social life (education, work, social life, sports, consumption, leisure, etc.).
